This world record breaking watch measures 3.

95mm in thickness and 49mm from lug-to-lug.

Introducing The Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic Breaking Three World s Records; Live Pics all three records are now held by a single watch, which moreover is not a prototype or concept watch it will be available as a regular production model.

I have to admit that this was a somewhat unexpected development, to put it mildly.

A watch this thin is obviously a tremendous technical achievement, and all the more so because this isn t a one-off; instead, it is intended to be worn and to stand up to the rigors of daily use.

It s often little appreciated just what a gap there is between showing a kinda-sorta-working prototype and a fully homologated, street-ready wristwatch but it s a big one, and bigger still when you re talking about complicated watches.

The new Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic is powered by the new caliber BVL 288, a self-winding flying tourbillon only 1.

95mm thick and the entire watch is a mere 3.

95mm thick overall, which would sound absurd if it weren t also perfectly true.

Bulgari, in this case, had a solid starting point their Octo Finissimo Tourbillon, and its 1.

95mm thick caliber BVL 268.

That watch set a new record for ultra-thin tourbillons in 2014, which went unchallenged until now; the hand-wound Octo Finissimo tourbillon is, overall, just 5mm thick.

This is considerably thinner than any other tourbillon in production today the previous record holder was the Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Thin Automatic 5377, which is 7mm thick overall, and which uses a peripheral rotor.

The record for thinnest self-winding watch was formerly held by the Piaget Altiplano Automatic with caliber 910P, which came out in 2017.

The entire watch is just 4.

30mm thick, and uses the back of the watch case itself as the movement baseplate.

This is the same engineering solution that was first used in 1986 by Audemars Piguet, for its reference 25643BA, which similarly used the case back for the automatic caliber 2870.

Of course, Bvlgari still held the record for the thinnest self-winding watch with a conventional movement the Octo Finissimo Automatique, from 2017, which is 5.

15mm thick, with the 2.

23mm thick BVL 138.

This is a micro-rotor caliber; the record for thinnest full-rotor automatic is still held to this day by the Audemars Piguet caliber 2120, at 2.

Bulgari Octo Finissimo caliber BVL 288, front, with ball-bearing supported flying tourbillon.

The pusher at 4 00 is part of a safety system that allows you to use the crown for setting the time; this is necessary because the movement is so flat that the stem lies in the same plane as the peripheral rotor.

The reference 25643BA from AP is a remarkable achievement.

Back in 1986, its design was revolutionary and in an interesting twist, actually borrowed from an ultra-thin quartz watch .

It was overall just 4.

It used a hammer winding system; the hammer swung through an arc, rather than a full circle.

This record for the thinnest automatic tourbillon ever it was also the first automatic tourbillon, by the way was unbroken until now an amazing run of 32 years.

Placing the bezel and crystal.

The completed, cased watch, ready to be mated to its bracelet.

So what we ve got here is the world s thinnest automatic tourbillon, thinnest tourbillon of any kind, and thinnest automatic wristwatch of any kind.

And this time, there are no caveats of the in current production variety in every category, this is the thinnest watch of that category ever made.

The caseback aperture reflects the doorway of the Bulgari Via Condotti boutique in Rome.

A fully transparent caseback would have been fantastic, but would not have been consistent with producing a sufficiently rigid case.

Now, this naturally raises the question of what records remain to be broken.

Well, the thinnest watch with a conventionally designed movement, for one; that s still held by Jaeger-LeCoultre, and the 3.

6mm thick overall Master Ultra Thin Squelette.

The record for thinnest full rotor automatic still stands, and has since 1967 the AP caliber 2120, at 2.

And the record for thinnest automatic movement, and thinnest hand wound movement, to ever go into regular production is still held by the Jean Lasalle calibers 1200 hand wound, 1.

2mm and calibers 2000 micro-rotor, 2.

About the latter, there are reservations one could express; they were notoriously unreliable and servicing in the case of those movements was more or less synonymous with discarding for a new one.

However, technically, their records still stand.

And the thinnest mechanical watch ever.

That record is still held by the Piaget Ultimate Concept again, that is not a piece for sale, but rather, a concept watch.

The caliber BVL 288 shares a lot of the construction of the original caliber BVL 268 but clearly, there is a lot more to what we have here than just the addition of an automatic winding system.

We ll be getting much more deeply into the technical side of the differences between the two calibers and the two watches, but for now there s no doubt that on a lot of levels, there s a new sheriff in town.

Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic watch sets a record for the thinnest automatic with.

flying tourbillon, unveiled at Baselworld 2018.

The watch draws on the brand s haute horlogerie expertise in technically advanced watchmaking and represents the fourth world-record for thinness.

In fact, Bulgari unveiled its very first record-breaking Octo Finissimo in 2014.

That watch, the Octo Finissimo Tourbillon was a manual-wind watch that measured 5mm in thickness.

Two years later, in 2016, the brand released the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater watch setting the world record as the thinnest hand-wound minute repeater on the market.

Last year, we witnessed the emergence of the Octo Finissimo Automatic timepiece that sets a world record for being the slimmest automatic watch on the market.

The 41mm timepiece beat out the previous record holder by tiny fractions with a movement consisting of 130 parts.

The ultra-thin, record-setting Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic watch is thinner than.

three stacked US dimes.

Now, we have the new Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic watch — which seems to be an amalgam of the previous Tourbillon and Automatic record setting watches bringing the best of these two worlds together.

The new watch houses the new Caliber BVL 288 with automatic winding made possible thanks to the integration of a peripheral rotor placed on the back of the movement and made of gold and aluminium for proper density.

By turning to a peripheral oscillating weight, Bulgari had more space to work inside the caliber and add the one-minute flying tourbillon with ball bearing system.

The architecture of the titanium case of the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic Tourbillon has been.

slimmed and softened so that the watch measures, when cased, just 3.

The brand s watchmakers then skeletonized the caliber, which measures 1.

95mm in thickness, and yet still delivers 52 hours of power reserve.

When cased inside the brushed titanium 42mm case, the watch measures a scant 3.

95 mm in thickness just the same as few stacked letter envelops.

The new watch, which sets the record for the world s thinnest Automatic Tourbillon watch, is fitted with a solid case back that has a sapphire opening shaped like the brand s doorway of its Rome flagship store.

Just 50 pieces will be made, with each one retailing for 118,000.

We were all anxiously awaiting the news from Bulgari at Baselworld 2018, as this brand has regularly wowed us with its record-breaking ultra-thin watches.

This year is no exception, as it unveils the record-setting Octo Finissimo Automatic Tourbillon which measures just 3.

95mm thin or thinner than three stacked US dimes and is the thinnest automatic tourbillon wristwatch in production.

Hands-on Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic now in Carbon.

The record-breaker is not only ultra-thin, it is now lighter than ever.

2018 was the year of the ultra-thin watch.

Piaget and Bvlgari, which engaged in the battle for ultra-thin a couple of years ago, literally smashed one record after another in less than two months.

The final word, however, went to the Roman brand, which introduced the ultra-impressive Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic at Baselworld 2018.

After winning the thinness record, Bvlgari has decided to play on the weight of the watch.

While not breaking lightness records, the new Carbon version of this watch makes it as light as a feather.

March 2017, Baselworld Bvlgari introduces the Octo Finissimo Automatic, with a 5.

15mm thin case the thinnest automatic on the market .

December 2017, pre-SIHH Piaget is back in the game with the 910P Altiplano Ultimate, the thinnest automatic watch ever created, at 4.

January 2018, SIHH Piaget wins all records with the thinnest mechanical watch ever, the Altiplano Ultimate and its 2mm thin case however, a concept watch, not commercialized .

March 2018, Baselworld Bvlgari strikes back with the Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic, the thinnest automatic watch and the thinnest tourbillon, with a 3.

95mm thin titanium case There is no denying that the last 18 months have been spellbinding when it comes to the ultra-thin watches.

Let s return to the present and the upcoming Geneva Watch Week 2019, where Bvlgari will exhibit its Pre-Baselworld 2019 novelties the brand isn t officially part of the SIHH and exhibits in the city centre of Geneva .

After conquering the thinness of its watches, the brand has decided to look at another specification; their weight something that is often forgotten but still extremely important when it comes to comfort.

Using the same recipe applied to the Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater, the Roman brand equips its Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic with a multi-layer CTP Carbon fibre case.

As with the repeater version, the look is special in all fairness, it is a disruptive watch that some will love and others will hate.

Still, the result is visually bold and unique, with layers of carbons playing with the original shapes of the watch.

The case, bracelet and dial are crafted in this dark and light material, resulting in a watch that weights only 48 grams according to Bvlgari, this is the thinnest carbon automatic watch.

Apart from the change of material, the watch is the same as the model shown at Baselworld 2018.

This means a 1.

95mm thin movement with a flying tourbillon and peripheral rotor and a 42mm diameter.

One evolution is about the thickness, which is now 5.

38mm, mainly due to the new material and to the fact that the movement is now visible through a sapphire crystal which adds some thickness compared to the ultra-flat titanium caseback.

The movement is still skeletonized, not only for visual reasons but also to gain space inside the case.

This watch now has a sapphire crystal covering now entirely the caseback.
